“It’s the smell of disinfectant that brings back the childhood memories for me. As the pinescented tendrils reach my nostrils I remember the brown sick bucket that was the most used family object in winter. That bucket could make you feel sick just looking at the thing.
I hate gastro. It’s most certainly not my illness of choice. In fact I’d rather my kids were beset with pretty much any other infectious illness but gastroenteritis: nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea that whip around the whole family before anyone can say ‘bleurghh’. And now, as winter looms upon us, carrying its coughs and sneezes on the wind, it also means one more thing: it’s gastro time!”
