About Me

NurseNaomi2016Hi, thanks for stopping by!

I am a Registered Nurse, Energy Healer, Author and Entrepreneur.

Six years ago this blog was a forum for me to put forward my campaigns and theories on health and wellness within a traditional, mainstream context. But three years ago my whole outlook on health transformed radically with the diagnosis, surgery and fallout of my little girl being diagnosed with an enormous brain tumour.

For two years I battled with and also against conventional medicine to find my little girl help and a cure for the devastating condition, Hypothalamic Obesity, that was the fallout of the aggressive surgery to remove her tumour. I fought for and facilitated two medical World-Firsts within this time – one I have officially written up and been published in the Medical Evidence Base (see my case report here). My motto was been “If science won’t move for you, move science.”

What an eye opening experience it has been for me, to become a consumer of the system I previously took such pride in contributing too, as the ‘old’ Nurse Naomi. What has struck me the most is the inherent sense of ‘disempowerment’ I have felt as the vulnerable parent of a sick child for whom the health care system could not (and, sometimes, would not) help.

I was wishing my love was enough to obliterate the brain tumour in my head. It wasn't enough to do that, but it has been enough to propel my through my fight to cure her.

Two days before the surgery that changed my daughter forever. I was wishing my love was enough to obliterate the brain tumour in her little head. It wasn’t enough to do that, but it has been enough to propel me, ferociously, through my fight to cure her.

When my daughter’s brain tumour returned something within me changed – although I could barely fathom how a parent could be a peace whilst their child suffered, I was aware I had stopped ‘fighting’ Hana’s condition, but instead found love in place of hate, and peace forming in the place that had been occupied by fear. I ‘woke’ up to my Spiritual nature and quickly began training as an Energy Healer – Theta, Reiki and Intuitive Healing and will be offering Skype consults later this year.

    Hi Naomi,

We have a foundation whose aim is to give all children access to soap and water at critical times. Part of our global initiative is to fix the issues around hand hygiene in our own schools. Many do not have soap due to vandalism and principals are starting to rely on liquid gels in the classroom which does nothing more than bring any infection back into the classroom.

Please have a look at our Facebook page and the petition site. At present we have the support of the Nurses Federation in SA teachers Union in WA with all others states considering supporting it. I would love for you to come on board and help with this initiative and encourage others to do so has well.

      Hi Keith,

Wow, how lovely to hear from you and it sounds like you are doing some amazing work! I’m soon to implement a handwashing project in a local school and will post up details here and on Facebook/Twitter as we progress. I have some local media interest too which is going to be good to show other local schools what can be done! It would be great to do something in more schools in the area and who knows, nationwide eventually?!

I’d love to know more about your organisation, and I’ll certainly “like” you on Facebook so I can follow, and twitter too, if you have an account, and ultimatly see how I can become involved in your campaign!

It would be great if we could work together as I dont have the qualifications and I am not a women so find it hard to get the Mums of Oz behind me. You could do the blogging and I can speak with the government etc. Have already met with the Federal opposition to make the issue an election promise!!!!!!! I did speak at the Australian Infection Control Conference in 2010 on the school hygiene issue.

I have sent you my number on FB but here it is anyway 0418938360. I also sent an email to Nurse Keith as well. Hope to speak today.

    Regards

Hi Naomi! I loveyour site! It feels like walking into a super heroine zone where the crime fighting is replaced with a crusade for health and wellness on all levels. So epic, great work! 🙂 I’d love to connect with you about reposting one of your blogs on immunizations on my new community advocacy blog Parents For Vaccinations. I think it’s be great to have your perspectives on there, and of course you’d be credited and your website and social media sites would be linked (or whatever else you’d like us to share!) Does this sound doable? If so, please e-mail me sarah [at] pelesend [dot] com. Thank you~~!! Happy July 4th weekend! 🙂

Hi there, I saw your travelling post and that you have a place in Egypt. I’m an American living in Egypt, married to an Egyptian. Our two month old son has been diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and I’m in the midst of the elimination process, though I feel he will have a gluten one as well, in my gut. As you’re probably aware, Egypt isn’t the easiest place to deal with such allergies given how people eat and given the availability of “alternate” ingredients. Do you have any knowledge of places to buy certain items here? Thanks!

Hi Abby, good to hear from you! I’m also married to an Egyptian and lived in egypt for years before moving to Australia! It’s been a few years though since I lived there though and I must admit I’m not overly familiar with products available for special people like us! I’m guessing you’ve most likely tried the obvious stores like Alfa, Metro, carrefour? I reckon Zamalek Alfa market and or metro plus Maadi metro would be good places to start due to the larger number of expats living in these places. Do let me know what you find, I’d love to know what’s available there nowadays as we when visit we usually bring our own stuff from Aus.

    Hi,
Is your rice pudding recipe posted anywhere? I saw that you give your kids a rice pudding in low allergy based, and would love to know the recipe.

    Thanks,

There was a post about feeding your kids a rice porridge in an amino acid base. I didn’t know if that was a recipe others could follow, or if the base was a prescription type powder.

Hi Cameron, if you could get in touch with me via my Facebook page that would be brilliant. I get a lot of spam here and so don’t use my personal email – still need to set up a Nurse Naomi one. Hi Naomi, I’ve just read your post about your daughter’s obesity. Whereabouts was/is Hana’s tumour? My son was diagnosed with a Pilocitic Astrocitoma on the 3rd ventricle, near the Hypothesis and Hypothalamus, 25 years ago. We were told he wouldn’t live longer than 2 years old, however, he has defied them all, undergoing numerous surgeries to no avail.
He’s had and still has problems with forever hunger and follows a diet 365 days a year.
As the tumour is on the optic nerve, he’s lost the sight in one eye and only perceives light in the other. In 1998 he also became hydrocephalus and had to have a shunt put in. There have been many other problems, side-effects of drugs, and horrible manifestations in the years. It’s never ending. Removal of the tumour is not possible. We just live and wait , as the tumour is growing all the time.
How about Hana’s? Would be nice to hear from you.

Hi Sally, I’m devastated to hear of your son’s suffering, and yours, I can’t imagine how you find the strength to get through each day, after 25 years of this! Hana’s tumour was a Craniopharyngioma, benign histologically, but locally invasive with terrible consequences to the areas of the brain that it damaged. Her tumour extended to the third ventricle too, it was about tennis ball sized and due to it’s proximity to the hypothalamus, has caused this ‘hard wiring’ to obesity, and thought consuming Hyperphagia. I can’t let her live her life like this, it is so very, very cruel. I hope we will find an answer to end our children’s suffering – keep searching! xx

Hi Naomi, Mark Stephens here from Litlle Forest Health Retreat. Good on you for having the courage to keep searching and asking for help. Not sure if I can help but have worked with some extreme cases such as Jordan Tirekidis, you can google him. He was eating 30,000 – 40,000 cals a day and weighed 310 kgs. Now eats 1,000 – 1,800 per day. Anyway would be happy to chat if I can do anything to help with hypnosis or what we do at the health retreat. You can contact me via thinkguy.au AT gmail.com. If you google think slim you will see what we do. Kind regards Mark.

p.S. Mark again, forgot to mention I had cancer years ago and am lucky to still be here. We are also regular sponsors of CANTEEN so have done a lot of work with kids and teenagers.

    Hello Naomi,

We just found this article on a different hydrocortisone that reduces BMI, we are going to talk to our endocrinologist to trial the medication.

    Here is the article:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23980724.

Jakub had a rough Christmas, he had a hyponatremic seizure (picked up a gastro bug) and sodium went really low and Desmopreson made him retain to much fluid. One interesting point was made though, his endocrinologist said possibly weight gain could be due to fluid retention, so breaking through more than once a day might help with weight (also ensuring no more low sodium seizure).

Good luck on your quest, wishing you and your family lots of happy memories this year year.

    Regards
    Marisa

Hi Naomi, is there a way to get in contact with you? I have some information to pass on that may be useful to Hannah. Kind regards, Cherie

Yes Cherie, maybe message me on my Facebook page if you have one? Or try hello@nursenaomipress.com but it can be really unreliable, so Facebook (Naomi Cook Writer/Author) would be good?
